Coach Zach Rule, who led the Lohn ISD basketball program during the 2025–2026 school year, has accepted a collegiate coaching position at Sul Ross State University, joining the women’s basketball program as an Assistant Coach under Head Coach E.J. Lee Smith. Rule brings a strong blend of high school coaching experience and NCAA playing experience to the Lady Lobos staff. As a collegiate athlete, he competed at Hardin‑Simmons University, where ESPN documented his notable 18‑point performance against Baylor University during the 2009–2010 season, along with two rebounds and a 42.9 percent field‑goal percentage. He later continued his playing career at Sul Ross State University, giving him firsthand familiarity with the university’s athletic culture and expectations within the American Southwest Conference.

During his time at Lohn ISD, Rule was recognized for elevating player fundamentals, strengthening defensive discipline, and building competitive consistency within a rural 1A program. His coaching approach emphasizes accountability, effort, and skill development—qualities that align closely with the direction of Sul Ross State University’s women’s basketball program under Head Coach E.J. Lee Smith. Smith, a celebrated figure in collegiate athletics, is a Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame inductee, a two‑time All‑American, a four‑time Southland Conference Player of the Year, and the conference’s Player of the Decade. With more than 30 years of coaching experience, including a long tenure at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, Smith has guided Sul Ross to historic program milestones and continues to lead the Lady Lobos through their transition into Division II and the Lone Star Conference.

Rule’s addition to Smith’s staff is expected to strengthen player development, enhance recruiting reach, and support the program’s emphasis on pace‑of‑play, rebounding efficiency, and defensive execution. His background as both a former NCAA athlete and former Sul Ross basketball player, combined with his experience as a high‑school head coach, positions him to make an immediate impact as the Lady Lobos prepare for the 2026–2027 season. Rule’s return to Sul Ross represents a meaningful full‑circle moment in his basketball career and reflects the university’s continued investment in building a deep, experienced, and competitive women’s basketball program.
