It was an interesting morning on the west lawn of The McCulloch County Courthouse Thursday afternoon as the time capsule buried in 1976 as part of the American Bicentennial had finally been located after being relocated following the courthouse remodel in the late 2000’s.  It was found just behind the gazebo about six feet down.  While not intending to open it until next week, water was observed coming from the container used, which is believed to be a casket from the Wilkerson Funeral Home that once operated on N. Bridge St.

As excavation continued around the area, small pieces of paper began floating out from a hole on the bottom of the casket and a decision was made to open the lid and to retrieve whatever items was salvageable from the flooded casket and to allow them to dry out.  Eventually, all of the contents were removed.  According to Chamber President Daniel Mendoza, those items that were able to be saved will be put on display for the public at the Chamber office starting on Monday.  Mendoza will be a guest on KNEL’s Morning Program this Friday to discuss what was found inside and what items were salvaged which eventually will be given to the Heart of Texas Historical Museum.
