Ballot Propositions for May 2024 Special Election

There are several propositions that will be presented to City of Brady voters on the May 4th, 2024 ballot, along with an election for City Council, Place 1.

Propositions A through D are proposed amendments to the City’s charter. The charter amendments have no effect on the City’s annual budget.  Proposition E would authorize the sale of the City’s gas distribution system as required by the City’s charter.

Proposition A is a recommendation from the Charter Review Committee to eliminate provisions which are repetitive of state law. A document containing these provisions can be found at this website: https://www.bradytx.us/DocumentCenter/View/3495/Ordinance-1374—Election-Order

Proposition B is a recommendation from the Charter Review Committee to revise and delete provisions for consistency with state law. A document containing these provisions can be found at this website: https://www.bradytx.us/DocumentCenter/View/3495/Ordinance-1374—Election-Order

Proposition C is a recommendation from the Charter Review Committee revising the requirements for initiative, referendum and recall from a percentage of those who voted in the last election to a percentage of the number of qualified voters registered to vote at the last general City election.

Proposition D is a recommendation from the Charter Review Committee to add that no person may resign from their current City Council seat, which includes the mayor’s seat, and run in an election during their unexpired term.

Proposition E is a measure to be considered by the voters to authorize the sale of the City’s natural gas utility distribution system.

  • While the system currently generates sufficient revenues to operate the system, it does not currently generate enough revenues to make large capital improvements as required by the Texas Railroad Commission.
  • Last year, the council was unable to approve budget item requests by the division.
  • Additional revenues could be collected on the system through an increase in rates, but staff believes that such rate increases would make the gas utility rates uncompetitive in nature.
  • Selling the gas distribution system would allow a larger provider to take over the gas system and make the mandatory improvements to the system, while still providing the consumer with competitive utility rates.
  • Should the gas system not sell, the City of Brady may be unable to fund mandated improvements, or equipment required to successfully maintain the system.

Early Voting ends on Tuesday, April 30th, from 8 am until 5pm. Election Day is Saturday, May 4th, from 7 am until 7 pm. The polling location for both Early Voting and Election Day is City of Brady City Hall, located at 201 E. Main.
