With grit and determination, the Mason Cowgirls scored a 42-29 win over Flatonia Thursday night to earn their way into a slot in the Texas State high school Class 2A basketball Semi-Finals next week.

In a typical game this past season, both the Mason and Flatonia girl’s teams scored an average of over 70 points. Thursday night, the two teams combined for just 71 points, reflecting the intensity of a game played by two evenly matched squads.

Flatonia got out ahead of the Cowgirls in the First Quarter, but defenses on both sides of the ball kept the scoring down. At the end of the first period, Flatonia had 7 points, while Mason was one point behind with 6 on the scoreboard.

The Second Quarter was another back-and-forth low scoring struggle that led to a 15-15 tie at the Half.

The game stayed tight in the third quarter with the lead swabbing sides often.  After three periods, it was Mason 24 – Flatonia 23.

The Cowgirls played hard to increase their lead in the fourth quarter. With a minute to go in the game, Mason led by 9 points before sealing the 13 point win at 42-29.

Mason now moves to the State Semi-Finals that will be played late next week at the AlamoDome in San Antonio where the Cowgirls will face either Marlin or San Augustine.
