Although they mounted a brief comeback in the fourth quarter, the Mason Cowgirls lost 38-25 to the Panhandle Lady Panthers for the State Championship in Class 2A, Division I high school basketball.
Panhandle came out strong in the first quarter and held a 15-0 lead early, and were up over the Cowgirls 19-4 at the end of the period. In the second quarter, the Cowgirls put up 11 points while holding Panhandle to just 6 for a 25-15 lead at the Half.
At end of the third quarter, Panhandle led Mason 29-22.
The Cowgirls cut the Panhandle lead to just 4 points midway through the fourth quarter before Panhandle pulled away for the 38-25 final score.
When all is said and done, the Cowgirls had a truly remarkable year in which the compiled a record that contained 40 wins and only 2 losses. And, it was a record that enabled the Cowgirls to accomplish their goal of competing for the State Title, although the ultimate goal escaped them this time.
