Mason Takes Three Gold, Two Silver At State Tennis Tournament

Again in 2024, the Mason Punchers and Cowgirls were well represented in Class 2A at the State UIL Tennis Championships held in San Antonio Thursday and Friday, May 16-17.

When the tournament wrapped up Friday afternoon the Mason squad had earned three Gold Medals and two Silver and again dominated the Class 2A competition at the State level.

Competing for Mason High School at the State meet were:

Boys Singles – Mason Hatfield

Girls Singles – Landry Lawler

Boys Doubles – Cade Dudney &; Kelton Jordan – Carlton Schmidt &; Keegan Ratliff

Girls Doubles – Jaky Zermeno &; Scout Magnus – Emma McCrea & Heidi Smith

Mixed Doubles – Jack Gillespie &; Lucy Rochat – Cooper Ratliff &; Taylor Bierschwale

Mason began the tournament with 14 players competing — then began the semi-finals on Day 2 with 11 players still in contention.

Eliminated from the competition on Thursday were Landry Lawler in Girls Singles and the Girls Doubles team of Emma McCrea and Heidi Smith.

In Friday’s action, Mason Hatfield moved quickly through the semi-final round to the finals where he met Luke Marshall. This was the second year in a row the two players had faced off for the State Championship, and it was the second year that Hatfield defeated the Albany player for the title.

In Boys Doubles, the team of Cade Dudney and Kelton Jordan lost in the Semi-finals, while the team of Carlton Schmidt and Keegan Ratliff won their semi-final round. However, Schmidt and Ratliff were unable get the win in the Finals, losing to a team from Quanah to take the Silver Medal.

In Girls Doubles, the team of Jaky Zermeno and Scout Magnus moved swiftly through their Semi and Finals matches to secure the Championship and the Gold Medal.

In Mixed Doubles, it was a familiar situation with the two Mason teams competing for the championship. In the end, it was the team of Jack Gillespie and Lucy Rochat taking the Gold, with the team of Cooper Ratliff and Taylor Bierschwale taking the Silver.
