Mason Dominates Class 2A Tennis Doubles At State

The Mason record for winning at State became even more impressive on Wednesday with the addition of three new Championships to the  104 State singles and doubles titles earned by previous  Punchers and Cowgirls.

Mason sent a total of 15 players to compete at State inb 2022  — six doubles teams (two teams each in boys, girls and mixed doubles); two players in girls singles; and one in boys singles. In the finals on Wednesday, each of the doubles teams  faced off against their teammates for the top State titles.

In Boys Doubles, the team of Jack Gillespie and Robert Aguero. defeated the team of Bailan Kerr and Jay Alschwsede 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 to take the State title.

The Girls Doubles team of Jakelin Zermeno and Reagan Norman won their title with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Lucy Rochat and Kinsley Jordan.

In Mixed Doubles, the team of Kyleigh Ake and Mason Hatfield prevailed with a 2-6, 7-5, 7-5 win over Sterling Smith and Tate Spencer to secure the State Championship title.

In the singles competition on Tuesday,, Mason’s Chainey Weitz won her quarterfinal match before falling a Christoval player in the semi-final match. Mason’s second Girls singles contestant, Katy Rhea Tedder and Boys singles competitor Quince Lawler were both eliminted in the quarterfinal round.

The State Finals were held in San Antonio.
