The Brady City Council met for a regular session on Tuesday, Aug 5 and while the agenda was rather short, there was much discussion on a few agenda items. Council Members Aaron Garcia and Felix Gomez were unable to attend. During citizen’s comments, two citizens Bruce James and Phil Chavanne spoke in opposition of the proposed Oncor/LCRA 765 KV electric transmission line planned to cross McCulloch County. They have asked the city to issue a resolution to reflect their opposition to this project. Finance Director Lisa McElrath gave the Council a short presentation of the FY 26 proposed budget and stated that it is now ready for viewing by the public. A copy is available to read at City Hall.
Under individual items, Council approved an interlocal agreement with McCulloch County for EMS services to county residents. The County’s portion for EMS services will be $303,685 and is due in the FY 26 budget cycle which represents 21% of the net expenditures for the 2023-2024 fiscal year’s operations. This agreement provides EMS services for the county from October 1, 2025, until September 30, 2026.
As required by State law, Council held a roll call vote to approve or disapprove the FY 2025 tax rate of .337476 per $100 of valuation which will raise approximately $96,577.00 in additional revenue for the city. Council Members Moreno, Owens and Phillps voted in favor of the proposed tax rate. This tax rate would raise the tax on a home valued at $100,000 by $24 a year and by $47 on a home valued at $200,000.
The discussion covering the current status of the Police/Fire building projects took up a good portion of the meeting. The consensus from Council was their desires to move forward as quickly as possible to providing both departments with safe and adequate facilities.
Other items discussed by Council included a brief review of the recommendations made by McGrath Consulting Group regarding the evaluation of Brady Fire/EMS as well as creating a future publicity campaign focusing on safety awareness of all city’s parks and public spaces and creating public awareness of cemetery rules and regulations effective October 1, 2025. Also passed was a resolution to consider and act on adopting a disaster declaration following July 2, 2025 extended weather event to facilitate formal application for state and federal funding for disaster relief.
The next regular Brady City Council meeting will be on Aug 19, 2025.
