Following their regular meeting on Tuesday, the Brady City Council recessed into executive session for consultation with the city attorney and for deliberations concerning real property.  After reconvening in open session,  Council approved the purchase of the Heritage Funeral Home location and the adjoining property behind it for use by the Brady Police Department.
Appearing on the KNEL Morning Program on Wednesday, Brady City Manager, James Stewart commented on why that location was considered,  “Not only would it provide an immediate place for the police department to go to, but it would narrow the scope of what we needed to do for the fire department.

Stewart added, “And that really has been the thing that we’ve been trying to get off high center to fix the problem, and this will accomplish two things. One, it’ll get the police department into a facility that’s basically ready to move into, and then two, we can go full speed ahead with a narrow scope of what we’re gonna do for the fire department.” He continued, “We are going get this property for $600,000.
And that is a considerable savings, considering what we were looking at having to spend on renovating the old Southward cafeteria, of about a million dollars which I think is quite considerable.”

In conclusion, Stewart stated, “I want to remind folks that this is going to be paid for out of money that we have in the bank.
We have a fund designated for construction of the emergency services buildings. So we’re not having to go for any loans, we’re not having to raise taxes, we’re not raising utility rates. This is money that we have in the bank, and is designated for this.”  The next step will be inspection of the facility within 15 days and if the inspection report does not reveal any significant deficiencies, then upon closing, the city will take ownership.  Then, the police department will begin the process of relocation to the new location.
